Standing Committee

a. From the meeting of February 11th, 2000

  • on Nov. 30, 1999, the Standing Committee of the Diocese of East Tennessee (SC) consented to the election of the Rev. Wendell N. Gibbs, Jr. as Bishop-Coadjutor, Episcopal Diocese of Michigan. The vote was taken via telephone.
  • was advised that, as a result of BACAM, the Commission on Ministry recommended, and the Bishop conferred the status of postulancy upon Wade Frye (Diaconate), Brad Smith (Priesthood), and Bowman Townsend (Priesthood).
  • received notice from the Diocese of Delaware of the Sentence of Deposition by the Rt. Rev. W. P. Wright of Stephen Scott Kirk.
  • gave consent to the Diocese of Massachusetts to the election of a Bishop Suffragan.
  • gave consent to the ordination and consecration of the Very Rev. Edward Stuart Little II as 7th Bishop of the Diocese of Northern Indiana.
  • gave consent to the election of the Rev. Robert G. Trache as Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta.
  • gave consent to the ordination of the Rev. David Bena as Bishop Suffragan of the Diocese of Atlanta.
  • interviewed Mr. Nicholas Beasley, a Postulant for Holy Orders. In accordance with Title III, Canon 5, Sec. 1 (c) (iv) of the Constitutions & Canons of the Episcopal Church (1997), the SC approved Mr. Beasley's application to become a Candidate for Holy Orders.
  • conducted a final interview with The Rev. Deacon Nancy Pickering and recommended her for ordination to the Priesthood.

b. From the meeting of March 3rd, 2000
(This business meeting was held prior to the SC Retreat that continued through Sat. March 4).

  • The Rev. Patricia Templeton was elected President. The Rev. Joe Ballard was elected Secretary.
  • reviewed a letter all SC members received from the Rev. David Garrett. Fr. Garrett believes that members of the permanent diaconate who later become candidates for the priesthood should meet with the Examining Chaplains of this diocese prior to their ordination to the priesthood (they do meet with them prior to ordination to the permanent diaconate.)
  • Fr. Michael Doty, newly appointed Archdeacon of the Diocese, advised that he will be the liaison between the Bishop, the SC, and the Commission on Ministry.
  • were advised that the Diocese of Lexington (KY) is preparing for the election of Diocesan Bishop. They are seeking names of qualified individuals.
  • Canon to the Ordinary Alice Clayton agreed to contact David Smart regarding setting up of an e-mail address for the SC.
  • set the 1st Tuesday of each month as our regular meeting date. This change from last year was at the Bishop's request, in an effort to make the meetings more accessible to his schedule.

c. From the meeting of April 4, 2000 at Diocesan House.

  • met as the Bishop's "Council of Advice" (Article IV, Constitutions and Canons 1997, p. 5.) Also present were Ms. Alice Clayton, Canon to the Ordinary and Mr. Doug Overbey, Chancellor.
  • Reviewed law enforcement authorities' continuing investigation into the matter of the death of the Rev. C. Martin Davis.
  • Charles Fel has agreed to continue as Church Attorney. The SC approved Mr. Fel's appointment.
  • reviewed the problems surrounding the election/ consecration of a new Diocesan Bishop in the Diocese of Atlanta.
  • were advised that Canon Clayton will be the Bishop's representative at SC meetings in the event of his absence.

d. From the meeting of September 5, 2000

  • interviewed aspirants to the diaconate. Of those interviewed, three were recommended for candidacy: Anne LeCroy, Janice Robbins, Ed Scott.

e. From the meeting of November 7, 2000

  • Bishop vonRosenberg advised the SC of the status of the proposed Conference Center.
  • interviewed aspirants to the diaconate. William E. McGee was recommended for candidacy.
  • interviewed The Rev. Deacon Mary N. Moore, and recommended her ordination to the priesthood.
  • consented to the election of a Bishop Suffragan of the Diocese of Southern Virginia.

f. From the meeting of November 21st, 2000:

  • met with The Ven. Michael Doty, Archdeacon; Mr. Rick Govan, Chair of the Commission on Ministry (COM); The Rev. Betty Latham, COM member and Ms. Peck's homiletics instructor in our diocesan training program for men and women desiring ordination to the Diaconate; and The Rev. Paul Wanter, COM member.
  • voted to recommend Ms. Felicity Peck for ordination to the Diaconate.
  • approved the request of the Diocese of Arizona to cede territory consisting of the city of Page, Arizona to the Diocese of Utah.

g. From the meeting of January 25, 2001:

  • consented to the ordination of The Rev. Thomas Clark Ely as Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Vermont.
  • consented to the ordination of The Rev. Katharine Jeffert Schori as Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Nevada.
  • consented to the election and ordination of The Rev. Roy F. Cederholm, Jr., as Bishop Suffragan of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts.
